Congratulations! You’ve almost completed the Foundations of Officiating course. At this point, we hope you’ve made the decision to continue on your Officials journey.
If so, what are your next steps?
USA Swimming, along with their National Officials Committee and Coach Advisory Council, set standards for how each level of Official is certified. The goal for these standards is to educate, train, and mentor Officials so they can provide competent and consistent officiating for athletes. This Foundations of Officiating course is the first step.
*Note: The EFSL typically adheres to the USA Swimming standards on certifying officials, but will make adjustments as needed.
Many individuals choose to start with Stroke and Turn Judge, while some others prefer to start on the “dry” side with Administrative Official. Note, if starting there, an individual would have to go back to Stroke and Turn to proceed to any other certifications.
Once you choose your path, you can begin the role-specific portion of the online coursework. There, you will build your knowledge of that role, and walk through real-life situations and scenarios to prepare for your on-deck training and officiating. Once certified, you are required to perform that role for a specific period of time - with a minimum number of sessions and meets - before moving on to the next certification, if you choose. And we hope you do!
Note: The Pathway for USA Swimming Officials Certifications is for reference only The EFSL does not require referees to completed AO certification, but highly encourages them to go through the training to better understand and support their AOs.
