Welcome to the Starter certification course. Congratulations on pursuing the next level of Officials certification!
The Introduction of the Stroke and Turn course stated the following:
“The sport of swimming needs you, but most importantly, the athletes need you. The goal of officiating is to ensure fair competition in USA Swimming sanctioned, approved, and observed meets. Without officials at these meets, the times swimmers achieve would not be valid.”
By now, you’ve seen the importance of dedicated, involved officials creating this fair, competitive environment. While all of the officials work together to provide a fair meet, your role as a Starter is vital. The Starter and the Deck Referee work together as a team to ensure a fair start to each and every race. This gives athletes their best opportunity to compete in a fair race.
As you begin the process of becoming a Starter, this course provides an overview of your preparation before a meet, your responsibilities during the meet including the steps for an ideal start, reflections after the meet, and wraps up with your next steps to certification.
By the end of this course you will be able to:
Identify your pre-meet responsibilities.
Recognize how your role and responsibilities coordinate with the officiating team at a meet.
Apply strategies to successfully execute a fair start.
Follow a process and procedure for each start including when things do not go as planned.
Understand the pathway required to complete the Starter certification.
